Hyde Park Hotel 22-11-09.

I went to the Hydey to see some bands and discuss who was the better bass player Tina Weymouth or Fred Smith? (Fred Smith). Solar Barge, Pex, The Velveteens, Craig McElhinney and Frozen Ocean played. I missed Frozen Ocean because I had to leave and figured the Velveteens to be a waste of time, I was half right. I think I had photos for this but lost them, shit.

Solar Barge is another project for Lyndon Blue aka Ra (guitarstick) and in the live format features Mr Serious himself Ringham aka Set (synthwizardry and gobletdrumpad). Solar Barge perform "the soundtrack to Ra and his friends' journey through the heavens and the underworld in perfect stereo sound". And they do it very well, if a little charmingly rusty at times. Also they wear masks. Next time less lighting please, sonic voyage need dark space.
Following this hawaiian feast was "Pex the Astonishing", whose hypnotic one man guitarama pleased the ears of all present, especially the very young and very blotto lady who "dirty-danced" Mr Pex during one of his numbers. This was a few songs after a couple, friends of the drunk girl, started making out in some sort of desperate bid for attention. They won, everyone in the room laughed.
I missed The Velveteens but this is what Lyndon said about them:

"There are many words you could give to the Velvetines’ pandemonium that ensued, and I’m going to go with “fucking hilarious” for starters: here we had a group of youths sloshed, smashed, plastered, tanked, pissed, polluted, sauced and just generally not doing very well that they struggled to plug in their guitars let alone execute a coherent musical performance. They stumbled and swore their way through the next half hour or so, with public displays of affection, coin slots big enough for godzilla’s pennies, guitars swung like cricket bats - at times, the rhythm section maintained some solid smooth grooves, but generally the effect was that of an ape swallowing your shoegaze collection and shitting it out backwards. It was classic rock and roll: a bunch of inebriated lunatics too far gone to play and much too far gone to care."

Craig McElhinney followed this spectacle in fine form, as always. His sets seem to flow out effortlessly out of his long pale hands and through the air in beautiful waves, like a black and white wacky-inflatible arms man in slow motion and tuned to C. Better to listen than read, ok?

Hydey 01/10/09.

smRts had planned a fundraising show at the hydey to help them get across this wide land of ours to newcastle to play a festival, unfortunately the grant they were hoping to receive didn't come through and they were forced to cancel the newcastle gig. They did however go through with the hydey show. Big Sea Go Ship played their second gig on the night and I hope they do plenty more, they were real good, much better than their first show way back in feb. Unforchjunelately I only have a minute and a half of their set down to zero's and one's, don't know why. Bummer. Wind Waker played after, they were shit. Buncha douches that owe me money and half an hour of my lYf. Splendid Friends played after that trash and were hypnotic but punchy, kinda like playing Street Fighter 2 but being too tired/wasted to concentrate on all the moving images so you just sit there and let it happen. smRts rolled onto/into the stage/corner like the bunch of degnerante gypsies they are. They also played some music. It was awesome. Real Cool Time for all involved, provided they didn't have to get up at 4:30am afterwards.

Wind Waker @ Hydey 01/10/09.

Show at hydey

Two Thursdays ago I went to the Hydey to see Taco Leg, Chris Cobilis and Lakes. Extortion and Ryan Jewell also played, but I had to leave early, bummer, apparently they slayed. I learnt a few lessons that night:

1. Rechargeable batteries are shit and will let you down.

2. When batteries die you often lose recordings.

3. Working early morning shifts will kill you.

Taco Leg put aside their usual material and played The Rolling Stones' "Their Satanic Majesties Request" in its entirety. Epic. Chris Cobilis played after and seemed to have a little trouble through his set and was vocal in his praise of chattery punters, though overall it was a very good set ending with a cover of Amerie's "1 Thing". Lakes setup his trunk of toys and played his solo guitar, keyboard, drum, tape stuff. It was very good what else can I say?

Chris Cobilis set at the Hydey 02/09/2009. I had some trouble recording this set, batteries died half way through and I lost the first half, a great shame as it was a very good set by a jittery and perturbed cobman.

Jack Ladder @ Hydey 18/07/09

I went to the hydey to see Jack Ladder last saturday. It was strange, strange crowd. Teeth & Tongue played first and were quite good but needed two things; 1. a real drummer; 2. a real drummer.
Kid Sam played after and were also good, drummer used a wok and what looked like a pot, sounded good. Nice guys too.
Kirin(formally of Mercy Arms) played guitar with Jack Ladder and preceded the set with some solo loop stuff, it was hilarious and very rad. Three douchebag dreads were standing in front of me, one asked the other what he thought.
*wistful upward gaze* "its interesting" *walks off*

I had batt batt problems so I only caught Jack Ladder on the ferrograph.

Get it here.

Enjoi.
