Magic Window - WAAPA Sessions

Here is a special treat for everyone, an unreleased recording going all the way back to 2008. This is the only studio recording of the long forgotten but classic Perth band Magic Window, which starred Amber Gempton on bass/vocals, Tim Loughman on guitar/drums and James on drums/keys/vocals, It's Tim playing drums when James is playing keys and James at the kit when Tim's playing guitar. Like most good Perth bands they realised very little of their potential in their brief time together (about a dozen gigs or so and 2 recordings*). This band started just after I met the three members, most of my friends and my girlfriend so I guess they hold some sort of nostalgia for me or something like it. As far as I'm aware these recordings were going to be released as an LP on Meupe but the WAAPA student James had lined up to do the recordings did a really shitty job, they got someone else to come in and mix them again but they did a pretty poor job too and then James moved away, the band was no more and the album was forgotten. It's a great shame no one involved thought to keep the master files as this could be a great album if it had a decent mix. Bummer.

Magic Window - WAAPA Sessions 2008

Since Magic Window broke up, Tim and Amber have continued playing in a number of other great bands including Astral Travel, Golden Staph and Bermuda and James has continued acting.

*The other recording of Magic Window was a mono live recording of the band at 208, released by my arch-nemesis Camryn Rothenbury on his then label Farmer Frontier, it was a split live cd-r with the even shorter lived Penetrating Stairs (Alex Glazov, Clare Wohlnick and Rohan Extortion). I will probably put that one up too someday.

It brings me both great pleasure and pain to bring you what I believe is one of the worst album reviews I have ever read, The Dada Tapes review by Marie Dominique Dela Paz. If you pay attention to the varied and many underground music happenings around Perth you may recall the review "A Day of Psychedelia with Dada Records" a few weeks ago on the very same website chronicling the Dada Tapes launch party at Dada Records, which is a great and entirely grating piece of fluff writing by a uneducated retard who happens to "admin" the sound of the stage website, obviously Marie does not recall Zen Frost's review,nor does she live in Perth as she doesn't seem to know that DADA RECORDS happens to be a store.

I could write reams of pages on what is wrong with these two reviews but I can't be fucked, it's better you read it yourself. I guess it's still better than xpress, drum media, sixthousand, wire, faster louder and all the other shithouse music journalism in perth.

Also, I would like to impart a word of advice for any "music journalists/LOLsmiths" reading this, If you "sit down in front of your computer and listen to this record" you are doing it wrong.

EDIT: It appears that Sound of the Stage have pulled the review, for your convenience and lolz, I've posted it in the comments.

Dada Records have been irregularly hosting gigs in their garage for longer than I've been around to get drunk and spill beer at them and most of the last few years of gigs have been organised by Dada's employee/local film maker/good dude Ben Stewart who also happened to record them all on his handheld 2-track, much like me but instead of making a blog that no one gives a shit about he decided to compile them into a fantastic cd. Dadas pressed 200 of these and have already given most of them out but for all you losers who didn't get one it's now available on the internet. It's a fairly accurate summary of most of the "key players" running about in different circles around town.

MMM was only sold at the launch in usb wristband form and is to be pressed as an LP sometime in the future. Mink went through a difficult and somewhat public experience a few years ago which effectively killed off the band as a regular force, read about it here. Yesterday I helped Taco Leg finish recording their new LP, it was a blast. In two 3 hour sessions about 20 songs were knocked out and many pastries were consumed, so pro. This album will define the next 20 years of Perth vegan straight edge Arch-core noise.

Golden Staph LP

For those unaware, Golden Staph were/are a short lived Perth punk band who formed in late '09, played their first show at the end November of that year and played their final show at the end of July last year. Between those dates they toured Australia twice and recorded 1 EP, 1 LP and 1 single. I had some great times recording those releases. The cassette EP was recorded in 2 hours in the middle room at Dream while The Preytells rehearsed for their final show* next door, which somehow came straight through the amp I nicked from my dad to lend Tim, so if any IndieJangleShitePop influence is evident on those frantic recordings you'll know why. This album was done a little differently though, we did bed Drum-Bass-Guitar recordings like professionals, albeit brutally hungover pros, and did the Organ and Vocals later, under more sober circumstances in a marathon 13 hour "session". The cover photos were taken in my parents backyard in Guildford, which for you other-staters is the home of good music in perf. The music was finished, mixed and mastered about a year ago but took a while to get released, probably because steam rolling band leader Onton moved OS around then. It's a weird sounding punk record chock-o-block full of brutal double fisted drums, smashing bass, ripping guitar hero pyroteknix, sinister organ and Amber singing and screaming in, above and throughout the mess.

Buy this record and thrash the fuck out of it. THE sound of Perth circa twenty ten.

ps I can verify that all members are fulysik MASSIV fans of SS & The Banshees and/or The Creatures.
